Phillip J. "Phil" Coulson was a Director of SHIELD, before that one of its best agents, Director Nick Fury’s right-hand man for many important missions, and the primary operative of the Avengers Initiative. Coulson was killed by Loki shortly before the Battle of New York. His death gave the Avengers the push they needed to band together and stop Loki and the Chitauri. On Fury’s orders, Coulson was revived using treatments developed by Project TAHITI, and to preserve his sanity after being revived, all memories of his revival were erased. Coulson assembled a team of agents to travel the world and investigate cases. While on this team, Coulson discovered the truth about the events after his death. During this time, it was revealed that HYDRA had infiltrated SHIELD, and despite the fall of SHIELD, Coulson led his team against HYDRA. After defeating Project Centipede, Nick Fury appointed Coulson the new Director and tasked him with rebuilding SHIELD.
